چکیده

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of traffic seen in Internet and what kind of models can be used to describe it. The traffic in Internet is an aggregate of traffic from many local area networks (LAN). Measurement results strongly suggest that the traffic is self-similar with huge variation of timescales, from order of milliseconds to even days. This report is based mostly on ten articles written during the years 1991-1999. The most of the articles consider the measurement and analysis of local area network traffic, what goes wrong with traditional models (Poisson) and how well self-similar processes model the traffic. Also the traffic caused by world wide web is analyzed individually.

Monitoring and Classification of Teletraffic in P2P Environment

Today, a large part of the teletraffic carried by the Internet is generated by file-sharing applications based on the peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm. This paper considers teletraffic measurements and classification, with an emphasis on techniques which can be used to detect P2P traffic with “conventional” PC hardware, and shows some initial results of such measurements, done at the Telecommunicati...

Multifractal analysis: A potential tool for teletraffic characterization?

Possibilities of utilizing multifractal analysis in teletraffic modeling and characterization are examined. Three standard traffic models are studied by using multifractal approach. Furthermore, multifractal properties of real ATM traffic recorded at Technical University of Tampere are considered.

Exploring regularities and self-similarity in Internet traffic

The characterization and quantitative description of Internet traffic is becoming increasingly important in light of the rapid growth being observed in the size and usage of the network. Modeling of modern teletraffic and large telecommunications networks with fractal stochastic processes has been investigated by analyzing traffic measurements collected on the “Federico II” university WAN link ...

Spatial traffic estimation and characterization for mobile communication network design

This paper presents a new method for the estimation and characterization of the expected teletraffic in mobile communication networks. The method considers the teletraffic from the network viewpoint. The traffic estimation is based on the geographic traffic model, which obeys the geographical and demographical factors for the demand for mobile communication services. For the spatial teletraffic...
